I bought Blazer's crate at Target- small pet carrier for only $15. He loves it for sleeping in at night and now that he is almost 11 months old I don't have to crate him when I leave him at home (though I do keep him in the lower level as opposed to running the entire house.) Not a huge investment if you end up not using it all the time or for too long, or if your pup outgrows it! =)
I think having a crate is great but depending on your lifestyle (I'm a SAHM) you may want an x-pen, too. =)
