Crate vs playpen depends on your choice of potty training methods, and what you think your sleeping arrangements might be in the future.
If you plan on crate training, you will need the crate. If you plan on pad training, the playpen is handy for limiting freedom when you can't supervise.
Max and Teddy slept in an xpen next to my bed until they were ready to sleep in my bed. They have crates too, but we never used them for anything other than a little hideaway in which they can come and go as they please.
