To be honest, I don't know about Alaska's climate. Perhaps it actually is like "quarantined" and the mosquitos don't carry heartworms.

I suppose if it were me, I would just consult another vet to see if they say the same thing. If they do, then, it is what it is. If the other vet disagrees with your current vet, I'd still get the meds. Not sure changing vets is necessary if you like your vet and feel comfortable with him/her. (that is very hard to find..I'm not any where close to comfortable with my vet and am still looking for the "right" one)
