Dogs frequently don't show pain upon examination. Many vets have told me that. Dogs usually only show acute sudden and unexpected pain - after that, they hide pain from an atavistic fear they would be attacked by the pack or shunned from the pack as a weak member in their survival of the fittest natural world. Dogs can have an amputation and still be wagging its tail, acting friendly and otherwise normal.
