Trimming the hair around their Eyes is a choice, but, don't think for a minute that they can't see through it...they can !
Many Breeds (Old English for one) are quite sensitive to light, and Vets don't recommend cutting that hair on them at all.
In my case, I brush, but never cut that hair, because I take my guys out Hunting, and the hair around their Eyes forms a layer of protection for them when in pursuit through the foliage.
