I prefer to use gel. Personally, I don't like the look of trimmed hair around the eyes, plus it requires constant upkeep of the trimming to keep it looking good and to keep the hair out of the eyes.
But, it also depends on how fast your yorkie grows coat. ZoE's hair is very slow growing, so it takes forever to get little pieces (and new growth) long enough to stay down, even with gel.
