Almost all yorkies are born black and tan...look like baby rotties. The coat starts to change color 4-6 months of age. Since hair grows from the roots, you don't see the color change on the length part of the coat but toward the skin. The longer the coat grows, the more you will see the silver (or blues and commonly referred).

What you described is the puppy color. Not all yorkies stay the black and tan. It depends on what is in the lines. Now, the depth of blue can also vary. Some will be a dark steel blue and some a silvery blue.

The colors you are now seeing will be his adult colors.
