I would not feel comfortable worming a puppy that way. A new puppy should always go to the vet for a check up. Take a fecal specimen and have the vet check it for worms. There are many kids of intestinal worms and they do not all respond to the same medications. Worming a pup can be stressful so doing it right after going to a new home is not always the best timing.
