Crates are not cruel if used correctly
4 hours is not too much time to be in there.
With that said, I am not personally a big crater. It's just something our family has never done much except for in the very beginning.
I prefer x-pens until they're old enough to have free roam. That way, in the pen, they can move a bit more, you could put a pee pad down, etc.
