Tibbe does the same thing. He loves to sniff when out walking and I let him "read his mail" all he wants on half of our walk but then the next thing you know, he's licking his lips as if he just swallowed something! I've threatened to stop his ability to sniff so much and even thought of muzzling him but so far he's not had really bad problems from it so I try to discourage the sniffing if I see anything it looks like he might scarf up. But it is a problem when you want to give your dog time to sniff and enjoy the scents left by other animals and people.
