There are compartment areas of the plane that are pressurized and heated and oxygenated, just like for the human passengers .......they are not just tossed up into the belly of the plane with the luggage! There are usually several "live animals" that are traveling on board....Live animals are not delivered to the passengers out on the baggage runway...they are hand carried to the baggage claim desk, and left with the attendant. So, they are not tossed around like cargo...it isnt quite that bad....but they can and do loose pets, although fortunately, I have never had that experience with Delta VIP. Continental did loose a baby that I was having shipped to me...but the baby was not lost in the belly of the plane, or left in some obscure department...he was making the rounds with the crew in the pilots lounge and he missed his flight! I did get him, hand delivered from the cockpit, by the pilot, 4 hours later!
