The slow growing coats that are silky are usually just a better quality of silk.

For example, I kept 2 puppies from a litter, one girl, one boy. The boy had very slow growing hair and went through an ugly duckling stage but in the end it was the right color and texture.
His sister had a fast growing silk coat. She always had it from the beginning and never went through the ugly duckling stage. Her coat ended up being silky and beautiful but the color was too light and the texture wasn't quite as silky as the slowing growing one.
Both had silky coats, one just turned out to be a better quality.

As for the hair growing, the head always turns color first. The hair on the body turns color much later so its hard to say what color they will end up with. The silver on the head is usual. It goes from black to silver to tan/gold. And often the colors keep changing throughout their life so they may end up darker or lighter.
