[QUOTE=gabby7;4182125]Hey guys, I'm new here and this is my first post.

I just got my yorkie Friday night, so 3 days ago. Today is her 8 week birthday! Her name is Gabriella, Gabby for short. I had a yorkie when I was younger, but this is my first puppy on my own, actually raising her by myself. ALL MINE!!! So, I just have a couple of questions that may seem like pretty basic questions to all you experts! Thanks in advance!!...

The breeder I got her from was feeding her Purina Healthy Morsels puppy food. He was also giving her soft food, but only 1 tsp a day. I know I'm not supposed to feed this for a long period of time, so she doesn't get addicted to it and stop eating her hard food. Well, the first night I had her home, she didn't eat much…I expected that. But since then, she's been eating pretty good, going potty afterwards, etc. SO YAY!! But anyways, my question is this…. He gave me a little baggie of her food to keep feeding her, so when do I switch her food? or is the food I'm feeding her now a good quality puppy food? I want the best for her and want her to grow up nice and healthy! She had her first vet visit (while in my care) on Saturday morning, and she was 1.5 lbs and my vet said she's very healthy

So, should I stay with Purina Healthy Morsel puppy food, or start mixing two different hard food to start the transition? What is the best type of food out there? I've heard really good things about Eukanuba, Halo, Science diet, Blue Buffalo, and my vet suggested all of those brands, along with Iams.

Any suggestions??? Thanks!

HI there! Congrats on your new puppy. . In my honest opioion I would keep her on the purina puppy food for a few weeks until she is adjusted to living in her new surroundings. I got a puppy a few weeks ago and she came to me also on puppy chow and when we tried switching her, she had really bad runs for almost a week to the point where we took her to the vets because we thought it was parvo. She is 5 months old now and is still happily eating puppy chow. She is active, coat is shiney, poops are good and her eyes are nice and bright. When she gets closer to a year I will start switching her over to a better quality food. My vet told me that Nahla (the pup) is doing just fine on the puppy chow and many dogs have lived happy heathy lives on Purina products.
A few months down the road and you want to switch than do it slowly over 2 weeks.
