So, our oldest dog (13.5 yo, 35 lb cockapoo) has been diagnosed with carpal hyperextension. The ligaments in her front right paw have broken down and no longer support her wrist, so she walks "flat-footed" on that paw. It affects her gait, of course, and she is also putting more weight on the healthy left paw now, too.
We believe she got this over time -- no traumatic injury, just a breakdown of the ligaments with age.
Has anyone heard of it? Our vet has only seen a few cases in his 30 years of practice.
It will never heal. Surgery is the only "corrective" option, and that involves major fusing of bones. Not recommended because of her age. So, instead, we are fitting her for a custom brace for that paw, from
