Most Yorkies need daily eye cleaning. I use a washcloth with warm water to soften the crustiness and remove it. It was a lot worse when Edie was young. Now she is 5 years old, and there is a lot less eye discharge. It still needs daily cleaning, however.

I would not cut the hair around the eye too short. When it grows out, it will stick up, possibly get in the eye, and cause more eye discharge. It is best if you can grown the hair on the bridge of the nose long enough so it will like down flat--not stick up straight.

Some eye discharge is normal, and it is common in many toy breeds. Daily grooming is important. to keep the area around the eyes clean. I hate seeing cute little dogs with crusty faces. And the tear stains look terrible, especially on the white dogs like poodles, malteses, and bichons. With daily handling, your pup might not enjoy the grooming, but she will resign herself to the inevitable and put up with it. Just be gentle and take your time.
