So glad you got him as he would have likely just gotten worse and worse, diarrhea started happening too, and extreme loss of fluid can take the life of a small dog quickly. They just don't have the reserves to handle dehydration and when their electrolytes get low, things get critical suddenly. It can sometimes stop the heart so getting him in and getting help in time probably saved his life. Hope he just keeps getting better and better. It's pretty tough on mommie, too, isn't it - having a sick little one?
