I don't think you pup is to young, you just have to make sure your caregivers are the right choice. You want to make sure that they keep things on a schedule similar to what the pup is used to, also you don't want to slide backwards in regards to any house breaking and training you have done.
Doing a few dry run sleepovers is a good idea. First you want to make sure your MIL can handle your dog. What if you were in Europe and she could not deal with the pup and put him in a kennel. Getting him used to spending one night there, then two nights will keep him from feeling like you will never be picking him back up again. Two weeks is a long time and you don't want him to think he has a new mommy so ease him into it.
You also need to have that heart to heart talk with you MIL about table scraps and what what food can be downright dangerous to a pup. My mother is really bad with this, everytime my sister leaves her yorkie there my mom feeds Lucy really fatty things and the dog goes home with BM and stomach problems. I have gotten into big fights with my mother over this. She just thinks my sister is being mean by not giving Lucy rich table scraps, cause she always seems so hungry (what dog is not hungry if table scraps are around). It's awful having to have several nasty fights with my mother over this, but honestly her parrot did not live a long life due to liver problems brought on by a high fat diet. I don't live near her so she does not take care of Lola, but I am not sure I would let her either.
Also if you dog is doing good with your MIL i would just have him stay there, it could be confusing coming home and you not being there. If there was a reason she needed to bring him back that would be different. Also make sure that you get a pet tag made with your MIL's contact info on it, if you are out of the country and the dog got loose it would be hard for you to get the message, that was another lesson my mom and sister learned the hard way.
Who knows you MIL might be a yorkie breeder, but I gave you advice just in case she has little experience. I know I am probably scaring you, but I guess I think it's best to be over prepared, over think it and plan for the worst. Because if you do then it is so much more likely that things will work out great and you will enjoy your vacation and your pup will be safe.
