In my opinion he is too young to be out when you are not home. I think it is fine that he can wander about when you are there but it worries me for a full day.. he is still a puppy. I kept a play pen for almost a year with my guys.
Also, if he is used to sleeping in the play pen at night he may become confused and then he will whine. He needs a "place".. like kristen said a safe place.
