It is meant to be worn with a collar but doesn't necessarily have to be. I don't use a collar on them with my dogs. Before I open the back door, I just slip them over their heads and let them run outside. It's a soft pillow, so I don't see how it could damage their trachea. You should be able to use it without a collar unless you have a very small Yorkie under 4 pounds. If that is the case, it may be too large to stay on your dog without adhering to a collar. If it's adhered to a collar I still don't see how it could cause trachea damage unless your dog gets its collar caught on something. It cannot be used with a harness as it slips over the neck.
