Part Two Mommy Melt down
March 22nd 6:30 am
I dress in the dark so I don't wake DH. I stumble into the bathroom. Wow, I look a fright with purple lack of sleep smudges under my puffy eyes. I brush my teeth and Rubin stretches out with his butt in the air, then prances to the kitchen. I say, "Ah Ruby no breakfast for us sweetie." He gives a tentative sniff at the pantry door. I shake my head. "We are going Bye, Bye " He rushes into the living room and does a dance in front of the door. I put the zebra print carry purse o the floor and unzip it. Rubin jumps in, his little nubbin tail twitching like a windshield wiper on high speed. I feel almost sick, he is so happy. I can't meet his eyes, this is not a fun Senior visit trip. We are going to the Vet. They are going to knock him out and scrape his teeth. Gosh I hate this ! I slide my feet into my nasty rubber clogs and call him into my lap. I brush him and do his top knot. He sits patiently. All this is what we do before visits but, this morning we skip the teeth brushing. He goes out to potty, then back in the zebra purse. Out to the car. He settles into the comfy car seat and smiles ( yes he really smiles, pulls his lips back and shows his teeth). It is still dark when we pull into McDonalds drive thru. Rubin is excited he smells all the wonderful greasy stuff frying. I order a large hot tea. He whines, what is going on Mama ? no bunless burger or chicken nuggets ? Rubin gives a reminder bark to let me know he is in the back seat. I tell him sorry as both our stomachs growl in hunger. Rubin does his dramatic 'what about me sigh' and gives me the stink eye.
7:15 am
When we pull into the empty Animal Hospital parking lot Rubin is shocked. He knows where we are and whines. I unhook his car seat and he jumps up front and into my lap. I stroke him absently and say a prayer, 'Lord please let this dental be ok and keep my baby safe." Rubin gives me several licks on the chin , he knows something is worrying me. I mumble we are too early and take a sip of tea I scald my tongue. I spit and spray hot tea on me and Rubin. I cough and tears leak out of my eyes. Rubin whines and picks up my over the top vibes. I hug him too tight and swab at the wet with my soggy shirt tail. Lights bounce off the mirror as two more vehicles pull into the parking lot.
