If he's filled out and not skin and bones, is active and clear-eyed with no symptoms, he may just be bored. I was having a lot of trouble with my hip and couldn't interact a lot with Tibbe and he started scratching for more food out of boredom. Before I knew it, my little furkid had porked out a bit. I had to stop his extra portion and increase his mental and physical challenges, he lost the weight and stopped the bowl scratching.

You might try adding a bit to each feeding and if he doesn't gain weight, then it's probably safe to conclude the little guy was hungry. But if he gains extra weight he doesn't need, it could have been boredom.
