I got a male as a re-home that had just turned 1 year old. I was given all of his shot records, but didn't realize until later that I didn't get all the vet records because there wasn't one that covered his neutering. Of course, with a male, it's easy to see that the testicles are not there anymore, but I wouldn't be able to tell one way or another with a female.
I have a neighbor that got a young -- maybe a little over a year old -- Cocker Spaniel female. The original owner had surrendered her back to the breeder and the breeder sold it to my neighbors on a spay-neuter contract. They did as they had promised and took her to the vet to get spayed. They later got a call from the vet saying that he had opened her up only to discover that she had already been spayed. I would have been so angry over that situation, and my dog being cut open unnecessarily.
