Every dog, including puppies, needs to go to bathroom first thing in the morning, just as people do. So the best way to find his tell is to take him out of his crate in the morning and put his leash on. Stand in front of the door for 30 seconds, if he doesn't do anything try again the next day till he does. He should do something such as whine, bark, scratch you or the door, or act different from normal in anyway. That will be your tell. This is coming from a Certified Pet Trainer.
I usually just take him out first thing in the morning, after he eats, after he plays or naps, etc. I haven't seen him give me an actual sign he needs to go. I catch him peeing on the floor or pooping on the carpet sometimes. Just the other day I was eating with a friend of mine and I saw Titus sniff around (I knew he was getting ready but it was too late) and pooped on the carpet.
