Default Rewards

I'd bet you give in to the whining (which makes the behavior stronger). Reward him with attention when he is NOT whining. If you are consistent, the behavior will become extinguished. This is called an extinction course. Note that when getting rid of a behavior, the behavior may increase for a short period of time. This is normal but lasts only briefly. Don't be surprised or become discouraged. Unfortunately, this is when most people give up as they think its not working. Persevere and the behavior will suddenly just stop. The dog will use the new behavior you reinfirced (waiting quietly in front of you), but will try the old behavior occasionally just to see if it will work. Stay consistent if you really want it to change. This works with ALL non-neuro behaviors - most behaviors!!!!
