I admit to being guilty of letting Sam have a rawhide. It's his extra special treat - only when I am brushing him out. It distracts him long enough to protect my fingers from him. He is an anxious chewer. When we are finished with brushing, I take the rawhide away and he gets treats and loving. I cut the soft/wet part of the rawhide in a zip baggie and it goes into the grooming bag until the next brushing.
If he just needs something to occupy him and I'm doing something else, he gets a bully.
