They could have found something and just wanting to keep it on the quiet. With police, you never know what they might be dealing with and they often won't tell the public to prevent a perpetrator of a crime with friends on the block know what evidence they might have found or just somehow someone passing along info they don't want known generally.
Could you have heard a car coming and going from that area or is it too far? Of course, it could have been a person on a bicycle.
If they couldn't find a body in the dark or anything else suspicious, could just have been teenagers or something shooting a gun in the air. But if you see vultures or something circling today.........
