Kids are taught based on state frameworks. Which means the state tells teachers what to teach at each grade level. Due to the amount of frameworks, there is no time for "extras". So basically, the government offices control what's taught. As a former math teacher, my kids can solve Algebra problems but can't count change. Why? Because the state department tells me to teach Algebra. It is sad but true. Teachers have no control over what to teach. We just do what we are told. If people would put more pressure on the government offices instead of blaming the teachers more might be accomplished. And there needs to be accountability on teachers, students, and parents. Not just the teachers.
