Grade 1 or 2 is a slight slipping of the kneecap. Many times dogs of that grade do not need the surgery but it can worsen over time. Buster was a grade 3 and I did have the surgery. If you got this dog from a breeder and your are considering exchanging it for another it is possible that the other dogs could possibly have the same issue since it is a genetic flaw. If the dog was purchased in a state that has puppy lemon laws you can try to get the breeder to reimburse you for expenses. You will have to look up the laws for your son's area and check since the dog is to be sent to you if that changes your rights.
