I feel for the poor dog and YOU, being far from doggie vet help.
Others probably have more exact knowledge to help you, but my two cents worth is that odor usually means fungus issues. The dark brown gunk does not look like wax and wax does not usually smell? It could get infected if he scratches a lot though. (I do wonder what the small dark red spots are? Blood or bugs?)
If so, perhaps someone here can suggest a 'home remedy' until you get home.
Hope you can solve this without having to pack up and go home early.
