Why not bring the dog to a groomer for the nails... there is no reason a dogs nails should ever grow that long, I hate to be blunt but your sister in law should not own a dog if she can't properly care for it that includes trimming the nails!!!

As far as the lady with demensia, I understand that there is only so much she can do but why can't she find someone else to help if she can't depend on her kids can you try stepping up?

Sorry if I'm too blunt, I've just seen way too much volunteering at the SPCA in my youth!
