I am sorry to hear Max is not feeling well. His problem could be any number of things, and his behavior indicates that he is in terrible pain. I highly recommend going to the vet ASAP, and emergency vet tonight if you haven't already.
I have been through similar experiences with both of my boys. For my Max, it turned out to be an eye corneal ulcer. For Teddy, it turned out to be gas -- which sounds funny, but can be dangerous.
