I used to scrub everything in my home and kennel with bleach, thinking I was doing such a good job...that is why I cringe when I see people advocating the use of bleach to kill parvo virus...it does NOT work!!! You must use Virkon which is an immediate kill to the virus on contact and does NOT harm the animals. I spray every area any dog walks or comes in contact with on my property, with Virkon once a week...and once a month, floors, walls, all crates and carriers and kennels are sprayed and scrubbed with Virkon....all feeding utensiles are washed with Virkon and then rinsed in sterilizing diswasher daily....anyone that comes to my home walks on throw rugs spayed with Virkon. (Virkon is the solution that was used at air ports and ports of entry to the United States, when mad cow disease initially broke out in Europe....upon re-entering the USA, everyone had to walk thru pans of the solution.) The only thing mentioned in the article that I have not incorporated into my cleaning regieme, is the use of the "Health Gard" solution for washing bedding and towels....I will immediately read this and incorporate this also!!! My experience with Parvo, the vet bills alone, to save 5 puppies, was in excess of $18,000.00....the TOTAL cost in replacment of every article those babies had come in contact with, having my home remediated and "sterilized" as well as the kennel and all the yard areas, plus ceasing breeding for almost 2 years, was in excess of $28,000.00. I now spare NO expense in my fight against this disease on my property or anywhere my dogs run and play on this property or in my home. People may think I am OCD about Parvo, but it is horrific and is a force to be sternly and unrelentlessly reckoned with! |
