If you crate a young puppy while you are at work you are going to come home to a very soiled puppy and crate. An X pen will supply your puppy with a place for a potty pad in a frame, food and water, with a separate area for a bed. A young small breed puppy is always at risk for hypoglycemia so it needs food while you are gone.
Crate training only works if you are there to take the puppy out every time it has to go. That would be very frequently for even a 12 week old puppy.
