Costs can be More than you expect. I think it is good to have a credit card for pet emergencies. If that won't work I would suggest $1,200 to cover shots, worm treatment, Monthly flea and heart worm preventives, micro chip, and spay/neuter and removing baby teeth.
It really depends on where you live, and having a basically health pup. One illness can quickly bump up costs into the thousands.
