Sad Yorkie can't walk :(

Greetings,
I have a 5 year old male yorkie. About one year ago my boy had eaten something that get stuck in his system and would not pass. He was walking with his back legs very stiff and straight. We took him to the vet. He said to give it a day and that he was walking like this because of his stomach pain, then sent us home.
The next day he could not walk on his own! We took him to the ER vet, they gave him a varium and he finally passed what was blocking his stool. Sooooo, after visits to the neurologist and thousands of dollars later he still can't walk on his own. However he does have feeling in his legs and feet. He can kick and move his legs very well. He is in a walker now.
He was getting acupuncture treatment, but unfortunately i can no longer afford the treatments. I did now want to put him on prednisone, but now I am having second thoughts.
If anyone has had this experience and success with any treatments, please let me know.
