i feed archie twice a day, but have dry food out all the time. i always have just enough dry food out to cover the bottom of his bowl. i feed him less wet food in the mornings, and more at night. my vet recommended that i keep his food out at all times because he can be a picky eater. but you just have to make sure not to give them too much.
do you think your dog is overweight because he doesn't get enough exercise? how many times a day do you walk him and for how long? Archie gets walked 3 times a day at the very least, and a couple of times a week, he goes to the dog park to play with other dogs. we also give him tennis balls and stuff at home to play with and he's always got his dog friends coming over and he goes over to their apartments. if you can't take your dog for long walks, maybe try tossing a tennis ball around the house before bedtime?
also, your dog is only 4 or 5 months. At that time, archie was 6 lbs. now, at 11 months, he's about 11 lbs. this is growth time, so it's probably more important to feed your dog more food. although you got a tiny yorkie, doesn't mean that they will not grow.
you can tell if your yorkie is fat if you can't feel their ribs when you pick them up. although archie is over 10 lbs., i can still feel his ribs. it's hard to tell if puppies are overweight or just growing. more likely, your dog is just growing.
the other thing is that dogs will generally regulate their eating. people say they tend to over eat, but I don't believe that at all. i think overweight dogs just don't get enough exercise and get too many treats. you don't see overweight dogs in the wilderness, do you? they're animals. they can figure out when they're full and when they're hungry. |
