Ideally everyone would stay home to be with our fur babies but unfortunately the world isn't Ideal. Reality is people have to work. I went through this debate with myself and my in laws (who seemed adamant that it was cruel etc) before I got my pup.
I did some research and a dog sleeps between 14-17 hours a day. So that is 8 hours when I do that leaves 6-9 hours during the day. When I thought about it I thought it would be silly not to have her cause I know when we're together I give her great quality time! I am lucky that I work close by so I'm able to come home for lunch and let her out. If I worked further away I'd still would have gotten her but would have had a company come by in the afternoon to check on her.
My vote is keep her unless she has a medical issue that requires someone to keep an eye on her.
I think here in England it's looked as being neglectful to have a dog and work more so then in the states. Since I'm American and my in laws are British they really seemed to give me some attitude about this decision. So do what is best for your fur baby and yourself and not what others think
