I had a baby girl that was 14 years old.,,,,...she had some congestive heart issues, I was terrified to put her under for cleaning her teeth, so my vet put her on a maintainance dose of antibiotics....she got a small dose daily, three weeks on, a week off, in order to prevent any bacterial growth in her heart and other organs that bad teeth can precipitate, and she did super until she passed at 16.....no heart disease secondary to bacterial growth from bad teeth, no organ failure secondary to bacterial growth on teeth....Like others have said, you have a really tough decision to make. In a position such as yours, I would look at options. You have the antibiotic option. Whatever YOU choose to do, just make certain the decision, as well as the outcome, is something YOU can live with. THAT is important....I took a baby in for teeth cleaning years ago....I was terrified, because she was so small.....and with all the encouragement and "Oh they do thousands of teeth every year, on babies smaller than Itzie, she will be just fine".....I did not want to do it, but I did it because of all the pushing to get it done....and I got my baby's body, a sympathy card, and a tiny paw print in plaster to remind me I made the decision to have this done, and essentially delivered my baby to Deaths door. That was years ago, and there is not a day that goes by, that I do not see that precious little soul's sweet, gentle eyes, watch me as I walked away and left her with the vet tech..... And there was the member on here that not long ago was taking her baby in to be spayed...she was sooooooo scared and worried about it....I encouraged her and tried to talk her out of her fears, assuring her that it would all be just fine, we all dread having any surgeries done, but they do just fine.....and then that evening, I got on here to check on how her baby did.....her baby DIED! I have not gotten over THAT event either and I will NEVER encourage anyone to have surgeries that are not absolutely vital to the dogs survival, done. Teeth, spaying and neutering are all called "elective procedures". They are definately beneficial for their health, but you dont do anything that you cant live with, in case it does not turn out well. YOU DO WHAT YOU CAN LIVE WITH FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
