My first thought was a weather change until I read the last couple of lines about the change in his gait. Any sudden changes like that with no explanation you can think of...I would always recommend getting a vet to take a look-see.
The pacing and what-not could be fear but it could very well be discomfort/pain. With a change in gait...I'd want my vet to check it out.
