I’m so glad you found someone you feel like you can trust! I just had to comment on the toothpaste though. Both CET and Petrodex do have studies that show their toothpaste is at effective tartar control. Tartar is such a huge problem for Yorkies, and it can cause lose teeth and it can cause serious infections and ailments, including heart disease. First, let me say that just because an ingredient is toxic to rats and rabbits (both rodents) it doesn’t mean it’s harmful to dogs. Look at the Saga Palm seed, dogs are the ONLY animal the seed is toxic to, so toxity doesn’t always go across species. Secondly, almost anything is toxic in extremely large qualities; even drinking too much water will kill you. Baking soda tastes terrible, and if causes Buster to not cooperate with you, it means you can’t do as through of a job. Also, baking soda itself is harmful in large quantities. I personally believe it’s best to put a tiny amount of proven tartar control dog toothpaste on a brush.

BAKING SODA
(Leavening Agents)

Baking soda, baking powder, and other leavening agents such as dry yeast, are poisonous foods for dogs if ingested in LARGE quantities.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Symptoms and effects of overdose are muscle spasms and/or congestive heart failure.

Fortunately, dogs do not generally find these types of leavening agents very appetizing. Hopefully, you typically shouldn't find your pooch actively seeking them out.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

Large quantities. As always, please bear in mind that it is relative to your dog's size. A Toy Poodle will suffer harmful effects from an amount that may have no bearing on a German Shepherd.

WHY ARE LEAVENING AGENTS POISONOUS FOODS FOR DOGS?

Baking soda is simply sodium bicarbonate. Baking powder is a combination of baking soda, calcium phosphate, and sodium aluminum sulfate. These chemical leavening agents are commonly used in baked foods such as bread, cakes, and cookies, to soften the dough and cause the batter to rise.

Typically, these compounds release gases when they react with moisture and heat (as in your dog's stomach). This reaction can lead to electrolyte abnormalities (low potassium, low calcium and/or high sodium), muscle spasms and /or congestive heart failure.

Hope you and Buster had a great walk!
