Its actually a fruit that grows on trees.....yellow and very soft, almost no real flavor, until you add all your other ingredients. My mother brought some up from Jamaica and told me how to cook it, and warned me about not cooking it properly.....naw man.... I'll buy canned..won't poison myself that way..

When the hurricane hit J.A. ackee was scarce.....so expensive to buy, but usually about five dollars a tin/can.
If picked too soon they are poisonous as well...they have a brown shell, with the fruit inside.
