Urine is mostly sterile water (unless your pet has an infection) and protein. The protein is what causes the smell and what causes the color. It's easy enough to get the urine and protein off a hard surface, but getting all the protein off soft surfaces is almost impossible. So they developed cleaners with enzymes that are actually bacteria that "eat" the protein. In other words, you aren’t “killing the protein” or dissolving the protein, or rinsing it away, critters are actually eating it up. The problem is this takes some time, it's not accomplished in minutes, it happens as the surface is drying and it may take more than one dose of cleaner. I've tried several cleaners, Nature's Miracle is so far my favorite because it doesn't leave a line of demarcation like other cleaner and I can even use it on my cream colored linen sofa with no problem. I think the best way to tackle the problem is to spay with enzyme cleaner, cover with a towel or pee pad so that he doesn’t go back to the same spot while it’s drying. Then you can shampoo or steam clean. There are some type of shampoos that are made for pets and you can see how well they work by using a black light. Urine shows up white under a black light.
