As a side note my friend breeds Yorkies she has one pair that has one or two tinies each litter. The mom is about 6 pounds and the dad is 5 pounds. The father's stud was only 3 pounds. So she thinks this is where it comes from. She does not breed for tinies, she says they are much harder to place in the perfect home. She only will place them with stay at home/ work from home parent who do not/ can not have children ! |
Lots of breeders use an extra small dad to try and get tinies, but it really depends on much more than the dad's weight and as you say, in this case grandpa's weight it important, and in reality so is grandma’s and grandpa’s on both sides. There are large dogs that throw off much smaller dogs and vice versa. That’s why good breeders study the “line”. So glad that your friend realizes the problems with placing tinies and has made rules for their placement.
