I remember she crocheted a dress, a short little jacket, pill box hat, and she covered a purse, all out of a narrow tourquoise satin ribbon....it was amazing! When she would come for a visit, I would sit at her feet and watch her knit....her fingers just FLEW!!! She was sooooo fast! I was 5 years old then.....I would even collect a quarter from the neighborhood kids so they could sit and watch her knit so fast! Of course, momma didnt know I was selling tickets to see the fastest knitter in the world.....!! We laughed about that so many times, years later....and now she is gone.....she taught me to do a chain stitch.....I still have a ball of yarn of chain stitch that has to be as large around as a grapefruit, so I have no idea how many miles long that it is.....and she left me her little portable Singer sewing machine, circa 1938-40.....and I can not sew a stitch!!!
hehehe..that's a great story. I actually do all of the above too. I learned to knit and crochet when I was only 13 from a neighbor. She was Danish and both she and her husband could knit and crochet. She went blind when she was in her early 50's and I would always go and help her with dropped stitches..she still knit as beautifully as before losing her sight although she couldn't find the stitches if they dropped.
As for sewing, I started sewing when I was expecting my first child. I took on a big job and sewed a teared bassinet cover. My husband then bought me a machine of my own and while my kids were young I sewed clothing for them, custom drapery and knitted sweaters for friends and family. I recently started doing a little sewing here and there again, as I lost my passion for all when my son died. I have sewn our Halloween costumes for the past 3 years and we have won first place at the parties we have gone to every time..hehehe..now that I am between jobs I have started the knitting to keep my mind from wandering..lol..that is..whenever this little hyper settles down and lets me do some work..
