Mine are pad trained as well as outside. Best way to go in my opinion. I wouldn't worry about his preference to potty on his pad since he's so young and it's what he's comfortable in doing. Just keep taking him outside once in awhile, and when he's ready, he will start "claiming" his territory for sure.
