Definitely get into the vet right away for a wellness check and vaccination schedule. Hopefully you can get documentation from the breeder on whether he has received shots already.
Hair -- my Max looked like a muppet most of the time when he was a pup.
As Ann wrote, just go with it for awhile until he is acclimated to his new home and has vaccinations. Comb and clip (if you can work with him safely) at home.
Brushes -- use something that doesn't have balls on the tips. I sell All Systems brushes and a few combs. YT member Mimimomo sells the very popular Madan brushes and combs on her site:

A little mustache/leg comb is a must have with a good brush.
