I typically don't do flea or heart worm preventative or from about November/December until around March/April because of how cold it gets here. Fortunately, we have not had any issues with either.

We did have one infestation before Yorkies when we had our Sheltie. It was a particularly warm and rainy summer that year and our vet said the fleas were having a field day - the vet had seen more people for preventatives/ways to get rid of fleas. It was a bit undertaking, like Maximo said, vacuuming, washing, etc daily but it did work. Good luck - oh, neither of mine have had any reactions to the topical flea controls.
