OMG so Sorry thought I posted this yesterday but DD got here and I got busy. Sorry!
First I'd say: He's a guy...all my male friends call big dogs "real dogs" and big trucks are "real trucks"....It's just a guy thing. Sounds to me like he wants a dog to be his buddy too. A doberman is like all other dogs, in the sense that if you raise it right, it's a wonderful loving family pet...treat it wrong and you get what you failed to nurture and train. Does that make sense? There are some breeds that are much more "head strong" than others...some say stubborn and some say take much more training to stay on top of, but he just stays consistent all will be well.
I had a doberman that I got as a pup and raised for 4 years before she went to the rainbow bridge, she got Wobblers Disease. She was the sweetest, most loving, loyal, obedient and friendly dog I've ever had!!! I spent a lot of time with her (but had a life too so don't take that wrong please), just was very focused on training and socializing her to be a positive representative for the breed. We had my mother's older 6 lb toy poodle living with us then and she was taught to be very gentle with and she never hurt her.
Before my divorce I had a Great Pyrenees, Garrett with the girls for the last 5 years. Here's a few pictures of them.
