I would allow him to experience you being gone from time to time from the first so that he doesn't become so dependent on you. Just be sure that he's recently eaten, has some food and water available and make your getaway for a while. No prolonged or emotional goodbyes - just gather your things and leave. About the puppy sleeping habits, it's been so long since I've had a puppy, I can't recall but as I remember they do sleep a great deal, wake, pee/poop, eat, play, pee/poop, sleep, pee/poop, etc. I think I remember my young ones being away about an hour at a time - something like that.
