If it is really awful and you don't think he caught it, you might run him back in to see if something has blossomed since then. Really, really bad breath can mean something bad is going on and if he poo-poo's that, you can go to another vet or just learn to live with it. Usually dogs have puppy breath and it is kind of sweet smelling, nice, pleasant - though I don't know when "puppy breath" cuts off and just starts smelling "dog". I'd be very worried if a young dog like that had really bad breath.
